Manuel Castro is Doctor Industrial Engineer from the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and Industrial Engineering, specializing Electricity, Electronics and Automatics intensification, for the same school. He has obtained the PhD Extraordinary Award of the UPM and the Viesgo 1988 Doctoral Thesis Award for the contribution to Scientific Research on Applications of Electricity in industrial processes. Participates in numerous research projects as a researcher, coordinator and director and published in journals and conferences, both national and international, in the areas of simulation applications in systems based on advanced microprocessors, solar systems or applications and systems distance learning systems and telematics to computer assisted electrical engineering (CAEE), serving as senior technical director.
He is currently Professor of University of Electronic Technology area in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Control, ETSII UNED and Director of the Department. He has been Vice President for New Technologies of the Open University and Director of the Center for Information Services of the Open University and Deputy Director of Research, Deputy Director of Academic Management ETSII UNE. He has worked five years as a systems engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation. It also publishes technical, research and teaching books and multimedia materials within their research and teaching as well as performs radio, television, etc.
He is a member of IEEE Fellow (for his contributions to distance learning education of electrical and computer engineering); member of the Administration Committee (ADCOM) of the IEEE Education Society (2005-2012) and first President (2013-2014) not American Society IEEE Education (currently being Past President Jr); Founder and Past-President (2004-2006) of the Spanish Chapter of the IEEE Education Society and President of the Spanish Section of the IEEE (2010-2011). He has won awards 2012 TAEE (Technologies Applied to the Teaching of Electronics) Professional Career, IEEE 2011 Meritorious Service Award EDUCON (jointly with Edmundo Tovar) of the EDUCON 2011 conference; Award 2010 Distinguished Member Award of the IEEE Education Society; Award 2009 Edwin C. Jones, Jr. Meritorious Service Award from the IEEE Education Society; Award 2006 Distinguished Chapter Leadership Award and its collective work in the Spanish Chapter of the Society of IEEE Education Award 2011 Best Chapter Award (awarded by the Region 8 IEEE), and the prize 2007 Chapter Achievement Award (awarded by the IEEE Education Society). He is a member of the Board of Directors of ISES (International Solar Energy Society) Spain.
Doctor by the Department of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Control of Industrial School of the UNED in 2010, where he is Professor Hired Doctor. He has been involved since 2002 in research projects related to mobility, e-learning, remote and virtual laboratories, and new technologies applied to teaching.
