Summary
The presentation will introduce the Semantic Web, the role of semantic annotation in the Semantic Web and its application to the education domain. Different types of semantic annotations and common techniques used in the state of the art to extract annotations will be presented. Finally, recent results obtained in semantic annotations from documents using instances extracted from Wikipedia will be discussed.

Author's Biography
Luis Sánchez Fernández (UC3M)
Luis Sánchez Fernández got a degree as Telecommunication engineer at the Technical University of Madrid in 1992 and a PhD degree also at the Technical University of Madrid in 1997. In october 1997 he joined Carlos III University in Madrid where he occupies at the moment a Full Professor position in the Telematic Engineering Department. Luis Sánchez Fernández is the head of the "Web Technologies Laboratory" (WebTLab), in Universidad Carlos III. Luis Sánchez Fernández has participated and/or coordinated several national research projects and European projects, many of them related to Web technologies including Semantic Web technologies. He is the author of more than 50 publications in national and international conferences and journals and of several chapters of scientific books. His current research interests are focused on Semantic Web technologies (semantic annotation, ontologies) and Web 2.0.
